What's the problem?

  • Systems are vulnerable to attacks and these attacks occurs at machine speed rather than human speed
  • We can prevent some attacks but not all
  • Others we can respond to, but this takes time since humans are in the loop. Attacks run riot until the response is implemented
  • We need to provide protection and healing mechanisms that allow systems to survive in the face of attack

What are we doing?

  • Vulnerability scanners, e.g. CodeRed, Nimda... (across the whole HP intranet)
  • Benign responses, e.g. throttling techniques
  • Development of secure test bed
