Trust, Security and Privacy is not just about technology, firewalls, VPNs, smartcards, passwords. Even when all this is in place, there is still need for the supporting legal and regulatory framework to enable the required changes to happen. These can sometimes vary from country to country, and there can often be tensions between the needs of industry, consumer and government/law enforcement.
The Trusted Systems Lab, in close co-operation with HP Government Affairs, works with national and supranational bodies, and with public interest groups, to provide reliable, trustworthy guidance on current and future developments in information assurance, and the effect these developments will have on public policy. Among our recent interactions have been:
- engagement with the European Union Commission on such topics as digital rights management, copyright levies, and the European Network and Information Security Agency.
- engagement with various arms of the US Government in shaping practical policies for industry co-operation on security vulnerabilities and homeland defence.
- participation in public debate and opinion-forming groups around Trusted Computing proposals, notably with German government and NGOs.
- helping to shape the UK's Information Assurance
Strategy.
