What's the Problem?
Imagine back in the 1300s. The idea of security was fairly straightforward,
you simply had to protect the gates. You know how many there were and where
they were, so you controlled them. However, as time went on, merchants
wanted to do business with other cities. They wanted protection whilst
travelling between these cities. Perhaps they would build huge ramparts
between these cities to enable merchants to do their business safely. Of
course this is expensive and highly inflexible but effective. We also have
to ask the question, how/who controls what they can do once they are within
the walls of a neighbouring city.
As we move into today's world, we can see the similarities with the use of
firewalls, VPNs and access control systems. We believe as we move more into
the future though, that enterprise boundaries will become more fluid and
interactions between enterprises more dynamic. This will create a whole new
world in which to manage security, and a major challenge for those who have
to do.
