» SE3D films showcased at Animated Encounters
The first films in the HP Labs-Alias SE3D animation programme have been showcased at the annual Animated Encounters film festival in Bristol, UK.

» SE3D blossoms at animation film festival
Bristol, UK, April 20 2005 - HP will announce tomorrow that the first films created using the groundbreaking HP Labs Maya utility rendering service will be among the highlights at the internationally-renowned Animated Encounters festival this week.

» SE3D service goes live for animators
The HP Labs Maya Rendering Service went live on Friday 3 December.

The seven selected SE3D animators will share access to the service equally until January, when their participation in a market-based allocation system will determine how and when rendering resources are available for them.

Three more groups of animators will be brought on-line shortly as the Sgrin/S4C Animated Gems participants are chosen.

Sgrin is the screen and media agency for Wales and S4C is a Welsh-language TV station.

» Solid sounds
HP Labs and Watershed have secured an Arts & Business New Partners Award to commission Joseph Hyde, a digital artist based in Bristol, to produce a 3D installation as part of SE3D. Based on ideas of pattern and sign recognition, the film will explore what sound would look like if it could be crystallised or solidified.

Arts & Business New Partners is an investment programme to promote the development of new, sustainable, mutually beneficial partnerships between business and the arts.

» Talking pictures
Award-winning animator Andrew Daffy will appear in the SE3D launch event at Brief Encounters. Daffy is a Maya Master whose work includes adverts such as Levi's Odyssey and Xbox Mosquito, the BBC programme Walking with Dinosaurs, two James Bond title sequences and CG supervision on Harry Potter films. He joins Radio 4 broadcaster and film critic Quentin Cooper to explore animation, education and innovation in the UK film industry.

The event will take place in Friday 19 November at 16.15 in Watershed Cinema 1. Tickets are available from Watershed Box Office: tel 0117 927 5100.

» HP and Alias sponsor multi-user animation showcase to highlight benefits of utility computing
BRISTOL, UK, SEPT 22 2004 - HP and Alias® today announced their showcase for short animated motion pictures using an experimental HP Laboratories utility rendering service. The SE3D animation showcase will be co-sponsored by HP and Alias, which produces Maya®, an Academy Award-winning 3D animation application. SE3D, pronounced 'seed', will investigate how utility computing will change the technology and economics of media production and its potential for uncovering new talent for the animation industry...

» Advisory board's creative role
SE3D showcase has an advisory board that includes leading industry professionals whose role is to guide the event creatively and help to select the 10 animation companies that will be invited to take part.

The advisory board members are Paul Appleby of the BBC; Mark Cass and Andy Payne, from Alias; Steve Hinde, showcase project manager from HP Labs Bristol; Craig Howarth, from 422; Shelley Page, European Representative for Feature Animation at DreamWorks; and Dave Sproxton, Executive Chairman of Aardman.

» First SE3D workshop
The first workshop for participants of the SE3D showcase will be held in October. The workshop will include advice on ways of working with the utility rendering service and a presentation by Bristol-based media company 422 on what it learned from making The Painter animation using the HP Labs service last summer.

Alias will also give a masterclass on the use of Maya, its Academy award-winning animation and rendering application, which is at the heart of the utility rendering service.

» Facing the future
SE3D will be launched at the Brief Encounters short-film festival with a panel discussion of industry experts and SE3D participants on the future of animation. The discussion, on 18 November, will be open to the public.
