SE3D is a showcase for promising new UK animators and is sponsored by HP Labs and Alias and run by the Watershed arts and media centre in Bristol, UK.
SE3D gives 10 selected animators the opportunity to use a powerful, experimental utility rendering service designed and built by an HP Labs research team. The rendering service uses Alias's Academy Award-winning Maya 3D software as its rendering engine.
The SE3D advisory group is chaired by David Sproxton of Aardman Animations Ltd and includes Steve Hinde of HP Labs, Andy Payne of Alias, Shelley Page of DreamWorks, Dick Penny of Watershed, Sarah Jane Meredith of South West Screen, Craig Howarth of 422 South and Toby Barnes of EM Media. The UK Film Council, Sgrin and S4C will also be commissioning films.
As well as having access to enormous amounts of computing-rendering power through the HP Labs utility rendering service, the participating animators will receive advice from mentors - highly experienced film and animation professionals - in areas ranging from Maya skills to scriptwriting.
SE3D was launched at the Brief Encounters film festival in Bristol, in November. The highlight of the launch was a panel discussion on the future of the animation industry in the era of computer generated images.
The completed films will be showcased at the Animated Encounters festival in April 2005.
