Hewlett-Packard Laboratories, Bristol

Radu graduated in 1991 with an MSc from University of Bucharest (Romania). He obtained his PhD in 1999 (Cambridge, UK) with a thesis investigating topology change in 3-dimensional quantum gravity. His interest in the newly emerging field of quantum computation was stimulated by the existence of an undecidable problem in quantum gravity (4-manifolds are unclassifiable) and by the natural question if this would be solvable on a quantum computer (the answer, disappointingly, turned out to be negative).

Before joining HP Labs in January 2007, Radu held postdoctoral positions at the Institute for Scientific Interchange (ISI), Torino (2000-6), and in the Engineering Department, Cambridge (1999-2000).

Research interests

  • solid-state implementations of QIP, spintronic devices

  • cluster state/measurement based QIP

  • entanglement in highly correlated spin systems, Kitaev model, topological gates

  • new technologies for optical QIP
