Professional Activities

Research Interests

Primary research interests include improving the reliability, fidelity, scalability and security of media communication over packet networks; the design of mobile streaming media content delivery networks (MSM-CDNs), that is infrastructure design which can scale to support media delivery to large numbers of mobile clients; and video signal processing.

  • Reliable video communication over wired and wireless packet networks
  • Secure media communications
    • Secure media streaming
    • Secure transcoding, i.e., transcoding or adaptation without requiring decryption
    • Secure adaptive streaming
    • Authentication for streaming media
    • JPEG-2000 Security (JPSEC) standard
  • Streaming media content delivery networks (SM-CDN's) (joint work with the HP Labs Stream Team)
    • Streaming media CDN infrastructure design
    • Rate-distortion (R-D) optimized video streaming
    • Design of R-D Hint Tracks for low-complexity R-D optimized streaming
    • Multimedia networking
    • Multimedia caching strategies
  • Wireless video
    • Low-latency video over 802.11 wireless networks using path diversity from multiple access points
    • Interlayer optimization for improved media delivery
    • End-to-end wireless video communication system design (e.g., video over 3G/3.5G/4G wireless networks)
    • Secure, scalable, video streaming and transcoding for wireless (joint work with Susie Wee)
  • Video compression
    • Frame-based (e.g. H.264/MPEG-4 AVC) and object-based (e.g. MPEG-4) video coding
    • Scalable/layered coding and MC-wavelet coding, e.g., Scalable Video Coding (SVC)
    • Video transcoding
  • Video signal processing
