Where is that picture from?
That picture was taken on Mount Haleakala, which is a dormant volcano on the Hawaiian island of Maui. The summit is over 10,000 feet high (over 3000 meters) and it takes 2-4 hours of driving to reach the summit, depending on where in Maui you start your trip.
Haleakala is a popular destination to see the sunrise. If you are visiting from the U.S. and you are planning to catch sunrise, I would recommend to do it on one of your first days on Maui, before you become accustomed to the time change. Otherwise, getting up at 2 or 3 AM for a multiple-hour drive on dark and windy roads can be hazardous.
Another, not as popular time to visit Haleakala is in the afternoon. However there are some advantages to visiting in the afternoon (besides the easier drive). Under the right circumstances, you can have the sun above you and the clouds below you in the center of the volcano. If everything is right, you can cast your shadow on the clouds below you. Furthermore, there will probably be a rainbow or halo surrounding your shadow -- quite an amazing sight! This picture was taken in the afternoon, looking into Haleakala's crater, and you can see some of the clouds drifting in and out of the huge crater.
