Biography:
SY joined Quantum Science Research in May 2003 and is currently working on molecular memories and logic, nanoimprint lithography,  nano-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (NERS), hyper-NERS, optical negative index material both top down and bottom up assembly, and nanophotonics with the world best nanotechnology team lead by Stan Williams.

 SY graduated from UC Berkeley with a BS in Engineering Physics in 1969, and a PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (also from UC Berkeley) in 1977. From 1970-73 he was with the Space Science Lab working on a traveling wave MASER with Professor Townes. In 1973-77, he was with the Electronic Research Lab working on  THz tunneling devices in nanostructure metal oxide devices with Professors Gustafson and Whinnery. In 1977 he joined HP Microwave Semiconductor Division working on GaAs field effect transistors and in 1980 joined HP Labs working on high speed photodiodes, III-V traveling wave electro-optic modulators, vertical cavity surface emitting lasers, and GaN blue LED and lasers. Several of the devices made it all the way from vision to manufacturing to products that actually contributed to the bottom line of the company! In 1999 when HP spun off Agilent, SY went with Agilent; and in 2000 he left Agilent to co-found a start-up company in Silicon Valley working on high bandwith transmission systems for telecom, semiconductor optical amplifiers, and microstructure optical fibers.

SY has 50+ patents, is on the editorial boards of Applied Physics-A and Journal of Nanoengineering and Nanosystems, and is a Fellow of IEEE and OSA.
