To view any of the images at high-resolution, click on the thumnail image. A new window will open with the high-resolution image plus a description and other pertinent information about the material being viewed. Click the "Close Window" button to return to the Gallery.

Note: These images were obtained using scanning tunneling or atomic force microscopes, and in many cases it is possible to see individual atoms. The pictures have been "colorized" in order to more clearly define the different materials and textures. The original images cannot be captured in color because the actual structures are generally less than 1/40th the size of the shortest wavelength of visible light!
