Technology in Education

Technology is playing an increasing role in education around the world. Every educational institution needs good IT infrastructure and almost every student needs an access device. The vast community of educational institutions, teachers and students share the educational resources they create. They are also leaders in the Web 2.0 effort and have created an impressive amount of content for education enabled through technology.

Despite all this, the impact of technology in education has been low in many countries of the world. The Technology in Education effort at HP Labs India is aimed at creating new ideas and techniques to enhance the educational effectiveness of technology. It also aims to investigate issues in human computer interfaces and in device design from the point of view of educational uses.

The team’s focus includes areas of joint interest for HP Labs India and the International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore. www.iiitb.ac.in

Our research hopes to answer some of the following questions

  • What educational applications can we foresee for MID’s and smart phones?
  • What features of human computer interfaces confer significant benefits to users in the field of education? What applications are likely to develop around them?
  • What major needs are there in educational institutions which offer media based education?
  • How can a personal device act as a student’s assistant or a student’s computer?
  • How can we promote collaborative learning in student communities?
  • What are the techniques to promote useful and effective consumption of the massive educational resources that the world of education creates?
  • What techniques of personalization can one use to meet some of the objectives outlined above?
  • Can all these techniques work in a distance learning context as well, drawing upon geographically distributed contributors and serving geographically distributed users?
Research Threads:
  • Novel uses of smart phones and MID’s in education.

  • Novel Human Computer Interfaces and their educational relevance.

  • Novel techniques to promote personalized education and media-based education.

Platforms in Use

  1. One of the platforms being used for this research is Moodle. www.moodle.org.

  2. Another platform being used is HP Educenter, a video-content capture system which feeds a digital library, for providing on-demand, on-campus access to rich media content. HP Educenter was developed at HP Labs India. (This was created by a project we have carried out in the past: Educenter)

Conference Initiated

HP Labs India played a key role in running the International Workshop on Technology for Education(T4E) in Bangalore in 2009 (www.iiitb.ac.in/t4e), technically co-sponsored by several units of IEEE. This led to the creation of a series of International Conferences on Technology for Education and the Lab’s team in this area plays a significant continuing role in these conferences. T4E-2010 would be held in Mumbai, in July ’10: http://TforE.org
