HP Labs India, Bangalore, resides in an epicenter of global high-tech companies. The unprecedented growth and optimism in information and communication technology have created huge growth opportunities for HP. Our research targets the four main impediments to adaptation of IT by the masses: complexity of interaction, lack of clear value proposition, affordability, and unique language, cultural and usage requirements.

Within HP, HP Labs is the "advance scout" for the company - looking out for opportunities beyond the current generation of products, and creating technologies that position our businesses to lead in these opportunities. Being an interconnected laboratory of the global network of HP laboratories we work closely with our colleagues in Palo Alto, Bristol, Haifa, St. Petersburg, Beijing and Singapore. We measure our success by innovating cutting-edge technologies and solutions that provide strategic business advantage and impact for our customers and the company. We are singularly focused on identifying and tapping these opportunities through world-class competences of our researchers and open innovation with external organizations.

Since our establishment in year 2002, HP Labs India has established itself as a pioneer and leader in ICT research on topics inspired by the needs of the emerging markets. In the past, our team has demonstrated how to simplify Web and IT experiences by developing technologies such as using pen based input for Indian scripts, voice based IT access in local languages, use of broadcast networks for mass communications, intuitive multimodal and gestural interaction, simplified web access using Tasklets and secured print flows. The lab has won numerous national and international awards for its innovative work.

As many challenges associated with access to infrastructure and devices get addressed, we are poised to see unprecedented deployment of web technologies in every sphere of economic, social and personal endeavor. As this transformation occurs, we are presented with an exciting array or research and innovation opportunities not only in technology but also in how to make them commercially viable.

Our active research areas include, but not limited to, are: Paper Based Interaction, Intuitive Multimodal and Gestural Interaction, Simplifying Web Access and Cloud Services for the Next Billion and Secured Group Communication. The above areas of research are tightly coupled with the goal to developing novel solutions to meeting the real needs of the tech naive consumers and small and medium businesses.
