Video conferencing has yet to live up to its potential benefit to the environment by reducing business travel, largely because it falls so far short of the quality of a face-to-face meeting. We're working on changing that.

Halo

Halo brings people from across the globe into an environment that looks, sounds and feels as if they are just across the table. Participants see each other in life-sized images projected on high-resolution displays. They can communicate with no perceived delays, read body language, and work face-to-face and eye-to-eye – all without getting on an airplane.

HP Labs has already made a number of contributions to Halo, and researchers are working on innovative camera, display and audio technologies to make the product’s future generations more scalable and flexible.

These include:

  • A multi-imager camera that captures meetings in seamless, ultra-high resolution video
  • A multi-projector, seamless, curved display that presents many remote users at life size and wraps around local users to create an immersive experience
  • A multi-view display that correctly conveys eye contact and gaze so that everyone senses where everyone else is looking

The goal is to make interaction with people in remote locations identical to interacting with them in person.
