Abstract: Of the many Peer-To-Peer (P2P) protocols BitTorrent (BT) is one of the few that has become very popular for large file-distribution. Enterprises are interested in a large file-distribution service to update to a large set of nodes simultaneously, for e.g. virus patches or software updates. Traditionally large file-distribution is done using large server farms or mirroring. BT based P2P file-distribution provides an inexpensive alternative where the nodes in the system act as clients as well as servers. In this work we develop models to study the performance of BT for large file-distribution in the context of managed networks. We then provide numerical results based on our simulation study and demonstrate through topologies of practical interest that our models can capture the behavior of the system and prove that the file-distribution time scales logarithmically in the number of peers. We also propose a modified solution to BT based file-distribution mechanism that focuses on locality awareness and includes the ability to manage the bandwidth usage over expensive or constrained links.
