Abstract: This report presents a new image processing approach, called S4 (scale-space self-similarity). Its theory is developed in the context of general scale-spaces, and it addresses the question of how to move up in a scale-space (upstream flow) if a self- similarity assumption holds. Robust tools for denoising, deblurring, and upscaling of self-similar images are derived from the resulting theoretical equations. This first part presents one approach for applying the above tools on natural images. Other approaches will be described in (a) continuation report(s).
