  Pharaoh: long-term digital preservation

The goal of the Pharaoh Project is to improve the reliability of long-term digital content. This means that digital assets stored now should remain accessible, interpretable and usable for as long as desired — well beyond the lifetime of any particular storage system or storage technology.

Selected Publications:

  • Preserving Digital Media (PDF, 37KB), Mary Baker and Mehul Shah, Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) Technical Conference and Exhibition, October 2006.

This paper describes problems with current solutions for preserving digital media and what we can do about it.

  • A Fresh Look at the Reliability of Long-term Digital Storage (PDF, 326KB), Mary Baker, Mehul Shah, David S.H. Rosenthal, Mema Roussopoulos, Petros Maniatis, TJ Giuli, and Prashanth Bungale, EuroSys 2006, April 2006 (Leuven, Belgium).

This paper describes the threats to preserving digital assets for long time periods and provides a model for evaluating how reliable a storage system may be for long-term preservation.
