TITLE: Tropical algebraic geometry and its applications

SPEAKER: Bernd Sturmfels [UC Berkeley]

DATE: 2:00 - 3:00 P.M., Tuesday April 27, 2004

LOCATION: Pi, 1 L (PA)

HOST: Vinay Deolalikar

ABSTRACT:

Tropical geometry is the geometry of the tropical semiring (min-plus-algebra).  Its objects are polyhedral spaces which behave like classical geometric objects, such as convex polyhedra and complex algebraic varieties.  We give an elementary introduction to this theory, with an emphasis on combinatorial aspects and applications to statistical models.
