July 10, 2007 — Susie Wee, director of HP's Mobile and Media Systems Lab, has been selected for ComputerWorld magazine's annual "40 under 40" list of IT innovators for her work co-editing the new JPSEC standard for the JPEG-2000 image security.

The list, which honors 40 top innovators under the age of 40, said Wee's work in imaging made her among the "people to watch" in the coming years.

The JPSEC standard, which was finalized in April, provides security for scalable media. In particular it addresses security and compression in a single specification, and it could open up new opportunities for secure global distribution and e-commerce for digital images. (To learn more about JPSEC, read Susie Wee's blog entry on the topic.)

Wee is also editor of the JPSEC amendment on file format security, an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology and was an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Image Processing.

Wee's current work is focused on media security technology. She and her team - based in the U.S., England and Japan — perform research in next-generation face-to-face collaboration, next-generation gaming experiences and technologies, mobile video, and HP Mediascapes, which are context-aware multimedia experiences.

In addition to her job as lab director, Wee is a consulting assistant professor at Stanford University, where she co-teaches a graduate-level course on digital video processing. Her research has been published in 50 international publications, and she has more than 25 granted patents and over 25 pending patents.

In 2002, she was chosen as one of the world's 100 top young innovators by Technology Review, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Magazine of Innovation.

Wee earned bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees at MIT before joining HP Labs in 1996.
