Feb. 2007 -- A gesture-based keyboard developed by HP Labs India has received India's prestigious National Associate of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) Innovation in IT award for its ability to technology more accessible for emering markets like India.
The keyboard provides a pen-based input for phonetic scripts (including Indic scripts), which do not fit the standard QWERTY keyboard.
"The technology has the potential to open up the power of computing to vast numbers of new users, all in their own language and without prior knowledge of English or typing," says Ajay Gupta, director of HP Labs India.
Unlike other most Indic-language entry methods, which either use bilingual keyboards or display the Indic keyboard layout on a monitor, the HP gesture-based keyboard is a low-cost, rugged solution that lets users to input data the way most people learn to write -- with a pen.
The keyboard was one of seven technologies honored among 150 entries for the NASSCOM award, which was created to foster innovation and showcase pioneering work. NASSCOM is the premier trade body and the "voice" of the Indian IT industry.
