HP Labs Bristol is HP's second-largest central research location and is among the premier corporate research labs in Europe.

Located in western England less than two hours from London , the laboratory is at the heart of a vibrant academic, cultural and industrial community that includes British Aerospace, Rolls-Royce, Orange, ST Microelectronics and a number of financial services companies.

The BBC's regional headquarters and its celebrated Natural History Unit are located in Bristol, as well as some of the world's best-known digital animation companies, including Aardman and 422. The region is home to the University of Bristol, University of the West of England (UWE) and the University of Bath.

Research focus

Since it opened in 1983, the HP Labs Bristol has cultivated leadership and centres of excellence in a wide range of technical fields, with a current emphasis on cloud computing and services, security and information surfaces.

Addressing real-world problems

HP Labs Bristol has strong tradition of addressing real-world problems in concrete terms.

Among their numerous contributions, researchers based here developed key technologies for HP's adaptive infrastructure offerings, delivering the next-generation data center to optimize business outcomes.

The lab also played a central role in developing HP's Digital Media Platform, which supports end-to-end, digital network-based storage, processing, management and distribution of video, audio, still images and other rich digital media assets.

HP Labs Bristol has been deeply involved in developing tools and standards for the Semantic Web, which provides a common framework that allows data to be shared and reused across application, enterprise and community boundaries.

Other key contributions include HP Virus Throttle technology, the SmartFrog framework for configuring and automatically activating distributed applications (now released as open source), the DSpace digital archiving system (now released as open source) and the award-winning Memory Spot wireless data chip.
