Abstract: We present the motivation behind the development of a new 100Mbps LAN protocol that is currently being standardized as IEEE 802.12 demand priority MAC protocol. We describe the protocol in detail and explain how it provides a number of advantages over alternative protocols such as IEEE 802.3 (CSMA/CD), not the least of which is the ability to provide guaranteed services to applications.
