Keyword(s):

Abstract: This paper discusses how a switch-independent, network-wide monitoring system for SS7 [1] networks can provide a powerful solution to managing the complex requirements of modern digital telecommumications net- works. The proposed approach to SS7 traffic monitoring allows the provision of homogeneous view across networks independently of multi-vendor switch hardware and software, thus overcoming the limitations of traditional tools such as network element built-in management and local protocol analysis. It provides the global network view aimed at by SS7 OMAP [1] requirements in a robust and effective way. The logical architecture of a prototype built-on monitoring system is shown, on which management applications are being developed. Practical examples of applications in the operational surveillance and investigation areas are also given.
