Abstract: Interoperability problems arise when independently developed applications need to use each other's services and share each other's data despite a host of differences in the ways they were developed and the ways they operate. Object orientation offers some tools for solving such problems. Ironically, though, object orientation also introduces interoperability problems of its own. This examination of object orientation and interoperability outlines the problems and solutions. This paper will be presented as a lecture at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Object-Oriented Database Management Systems, August 6-16 1993, Kusadasi, Turkey. The lecture notes will be published by Springer-Verlag under the title Object-Oriented Databases. The material in this lecture was designed to complement the other lectures, and to focus particularly on the role of object-oriented databases in interoperability.
