Integrating Heterogeneous Databases: the Problem and a Solution

Keyword(s):

Abstract: Over time companies develop databases without which they could not continue in business. These systems tend to be developed at different times and in different ways for different parts of the organisation. Although they often have much in common it is not easy to use them together, because of the way they were originally developed and have since been maintained. Heterogeneous database systems are addressing this problem. The integrator is such a system, being developed at HP Labs in Bristol. It provides a way of incrementally integrating data sources and of producing user-specific views of them without requiring the re-implementation of existing legacy applications.
