Color Encoding Issues on Computational Color Reproduction

Abstract: Color image reproduction has evolved through several revolutions, with increasing quality and accessibility to the technology. As the technology evolved from painting to printing, to photography and further to television, we have seen the production means and technical expertise shift from the artists and artisans to the printers, to the chemists, to the electrical engineers. We are now on the verge of another revolution, when color reproduction will be implemented entirely by computational systems. For this revolution to be effective a number of issues have to be resolved, both to ensure the success of the technology and to prevent costly mistakes. We discuss here the encoding of color information and present arguments for the choice of CIELAB as a color image encoding standard.
