Research opportunities & challenges

Content Transformation describes the seamless transfer of content between physical and digital media, and the access to content wherever customers desire. HPL’s research seeks to enable a complete convergence of physical and digital information that provides users with new, intuitive, powerful ways of interacting with information.

The exponential growth of published content—print and digital—is changing the way people access and interact with information. Content creators and consumers are demanding more personalization, more channels and timely access to information.

Several challenges impede the convergence of physical and digital information. Today, content is not simultaneously easy to find, access and repurpose. While paper-based, hand-annotated documents are convenient, these documents are static, hard to scan, and they inhibit real-time collaboration. Displays are cumbersome, power hungry, fragile and work poorly in many lighting conditions. And, within the enterprise, the movement of content between repositories is awkward, time consuming and can slow down business decision-making.

Three large projects comprise our Content Transformation portfolio:

Next Generation Displays

Our mission is to create the display that is the central component of the next generation of ‘thin’ appliances or ‘Information Surfaces’. Our Nirvana Display will be able to show print quality information as well as video and interactive media, will be light weight, robust and mobile, and will be capable of being manufactured at low cost and with low capital investment. Because of its paper-like and video capabilities, its flexible form factor and ease of customization and integration into product, Nirvana will also enable novel product capabilities such as active surfaces/skins.

Automating Publishing

The Automated Publishing project invents technologies that automate the creative publishing process and drastically reduce both the skill and time required for consumers and SMBs to publish professional-quality content. Our goal is to make it easy for customers to unlock their media assets, wherever they are located, and use them to create new content with streamlined and easy-to-use composition tools, so that they can be printed to paper or otherwise consumed. Our work comprises innovations in multimedia content analysis, composition, and digital/paper interactions.

Document Lifecycle

Content transformation takes on new meaning in the fully-connected, mobile, distributed world. Content exists in electronic and physical form, and must move between these two worlds seamlessly. Our work changes the way largely printed content is born, lives and dies in the connected world. To do this, we are inventing powerful algorithms, systems and services for printing and imaging, content transformation and multi-level analytics. Specific technologies include security, next-generational printing, functional image processing, classification and policy-driven workflows.
