Analytics

Research opportunities and challenges

Analytics describes HP Labs’ research on technologies and processes that deliver new ways to leverage data across different formats and business disciplines, enabling faster, better-informed decision-making.

Organizations rely on business analytics to inform decision-making about their internal operations, their customers, their sales and supply chain, in order to cut costs, improve asset management, and increase efficiency. Analytic software can improve decisions in security, marketing, customer profiling and personalization, procurement, supply chain, risk management, business intelligence, workforce management, and IT.

In addition, the opportunity exists to aggregate data from different sources to create an unprecedented level of intelligence on which to base business decisions. The key is to capture and process data in the unstructured format, which is data lying not in databases but in a variety of files that include email, word processing documents, slide decks, collaboration sites, and wikis.

Three large projects comprise our Analytics portfolio:

Automating Security

Our vision is to achieve a far greater degree of enterprise-grade IT security and resiliency than is in operation today through an analytics-led, integrated security lifecycle. As the assessment of risk changes, different policies kick in, the underlying mechanisms adapt and metrics show how the organization is doing and whether its choices turned out to be good ones or not. Model-driven metrics can provide the assurance enterprises and government agencies are looking for. Ultimately, the aim is to automate as much of the lifecycle as possible.

Analytics for Operations

We foresee the emergence of the “analytic enterprise”: an enterprise in which clean, real-time data automatically feeds models of the key business implications, and in which the decision processes are seamlessly and completely optimized based on predictions and tradeoffs. We are enabling a radical transformation from backward-looking, information-based enterprises to forward-looking, continuously optimized enterprises. We are creating an integrated system for data-driven advanced analytics services that addresses HP’s key strategic and operational challenges while providing the foundation for new offerings in Business Analytics.

Analytics for Personalization

We aim to build the technology and analytical platform to enable HP to be the leading personalization and customer-intelligence services provider. We are building the analytics and the cloud profile platform to pull together data from a wide variety of sources and build the most comprehensive and trusted consumer/behavioral profile in the industry, securely, transparently and controllably. Our technology allows partners to predict and address the individual needs of their customers and to deliver personalized experiences to end-users. We are making personalization real and segmentation history.
