An implementation of Mobile IP under Linux

Overview

Nodes, that use IP version 4, are supposed to be attached to the network that its network identification (within the IP address) says. It means, unless they change its IP address, the IP address identifies its physical attachment to the Internet. This implies nodes will just work if they are connected to the right place. If they want to move around, and connect to new networks they need a new IP address.

With new emerging communication wireless technologies, such as Infrared, radio, ... , and new powerful and smaller machines,  that conception of attachment changes radically. Nodes want to be independent of the network and they want to be plugged anytime, anywhere.

With these new requirements , Mobile IP is created to avoid this lack of “freedom” under IP version 4 (as known as IPv4). This new standard is used to allow nodes to be connected to their “home networks” when they are away and connected physically on another network. This allows mobile nodes to be connected logically to their home network, independently where they are and totally transparent from the user point of view.
