Sudhir Dixit

Biography

Sudhir Dixit is the Director of HP Labs India. The principal focus of the laboratory is on creating new technologies to address the information technology needs of the next billion customers for HP. A large majority of these new customers arise from rapidly growing economies such as India with distinct technological, social and economic characteristics. By understanding this context deeply, HP Labs aims to create new and relevant technologies. The laboratory conducts leading-edge research on technologies to enrich and simplify the end-user experience by seamlessly converging interactions with devices, paper, digital content and the Web, and develops product concepts and system demonstrators.

Prior to joining HP Labs in June 2009, Dixit held a joint appointment as a CTO at the Centre for Internet Excellence and a Research Manager at the Centre for Wireless Communications, both at the University of Oulu, Finland. From 1996 to 2008, he held various positions with Nokia: Senior Research Manager, Research Fellow, Head of Nokia Research Center (Boston), and in the later years as Head of Network Technology (USA) for Nokia Siemens Networks. He has also held the position of Senior Director at Research In Motion and other senior management and technical positions at such companies as Verizon (previously NYNEX and GTE Labs), Motorola, Wang Labs, Harris Corporation.

Dixit received his Ph.D. degree in electronic science and telecommunications from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, U.K, and his M.B.A. degree from the Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne, Florida, M.E. degree from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, India, and the B.E. degree from Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, Bhopal, India.

Research interests

Dixit’s primary research interests are in broadband communications, human-device multi-modal interactions, content networking, mobile devices, bio-inspired computing and communications, and services and applications. Dixit passionately believes that the next wave of innovations and market opportunities come from the new growth markets of billions of new potential users of information technology who have been barely touched by the computing and the communications revolution of the past decade. The research challenges are enormous not only because of the need to minimize both the equipment cost and the operational expense but to provide clear value proposition (more for less) with real benefits and ease of use.
