Biography

Jim is a researcher in the Information Surfaces Lab, focused on creating new technologies for updatable, low-cost printable display surfaces that combine the best features of existing displays and print. Jim joined HP Labs in 1984 after receiving his Ph.D in Applied Physics from Yale University.  His reserach has covered a variety of topics in magnetics, thin film devices, MEMS and nanomaterials.  Technologies that he has helped develop for HP include mageto-optic recording, magnetic disk drives, probe storage, magnetic memory, biosensors, OLED displays and printed electronics.  He spent a year with the National Institute of Standards and Technology and he also led the NIST/ATP funded program on Ultra-High Density Recording Heads.

Research interests

Jim is currently involved with making very large and low cost displays using roll-to-roll fabrication.  This involves understanding and solving the fundamental problems with solution-processed, high performance light-emitting diodes.

Awards

Jim received the Leadership Achievement Award from the National Storage Industry Consortium in 1997.
